What is a Pulse Oximeter Device?

The Oximeter is a device that measures your percentage blood oxygen saturation, in your blood. The device is non-invasive, as well as pain-free. It can easily detect small changes in the blood’s oxygen level, and it particularly detects changes in the blood’s ability to transport oxygen to various parts of the body, such as fingers and toes.

What is it used for

Due to various health conditions, people may experience a lack of oxygen in the blood, which needs to be monitored closely. The Oximeter can also help identify undiagnosed health conditions that may be affecting blood oxygen saturation, and give you the opportunity to consult with your medical advisor in time.

How does it work?

The Oximeter is placed on a finger like a clamp. The device sends two rays of light through the finger, one red light and one infrared light, and it then determines the oxygen saturation of your blood by measuring how much light your blood absorbs.

The device shows your heartbeat rate (BPM), as well as your oxygen saturation percentage reading on the display.

How to use it

In order to have an accurate result, please be sure to avoid the following:

  • Bright light such as sunlight
  • Dirt on the fingers
  • Nail polish
  • False nails
  • Too much movement, which can disrupt the pulse movement

To get ready to use the Oximeter, wash your hands thoroughly, remove nail varnish or false nails on the one finger that you will use for the device, and move away from too much bright light or sunlight. Be sure to sit comfortably so that you reduce your movement while the measurement is taking place.

Doing the test

When you have ensured you are ready for the test, place the device on your finger of choice. Make sure that it is firmly in place, and lay your hand down on a flat surface to avoid too much movement. Record the readings on the display in the table provided. Repeat this test twice a day for two weeks.

Results

The normal percentage for blood saturation is between 95% and 100%.

If your blood oxygen level drops below 95%, between 90% and 94% and you feel ill, be sure to consult your doctor. However, if you are not feeling too ill, try to move around a bit, take some deep breaths, get some fresh air, and drink enough water. You can then take the test again, and your oxygen saturation may have improved.

If your blood oxygen level drops below 90%, or if you simply feel unwell, please be sure to contact your doctor for appropriate advice and treatment. Even if your readings appear normal, contact your doctor immediately if you are struggling to breathe.
